Rust assured, you can save your vehicle.

Vehicles are one of the top 5 largest expenses for the average adult. Why let your investment rust away?

If you’re here to find a vehicle, fix a vehicle, sell a vehicle, or junk a vehicle, I think we can all agree they cost money.

  2. Mechanical Damage
  3. Accident Damage

Top Reason Vehicles Fail Inspection?

  1. Rust

We all know that Vehicles in Maine rust out.  If you want to keep a vehicle in Maine truly rust free, don’t drive it in the winter. Park it before they first salt the roads. Don’t bring it out until we’ve had a few good spring rains to wash off the roads. If you do have to drive it in the winter It helps to implement some preventative measures.  At-least twice a year give your vehicle a thorough cleaning and coating. This will guarantee that it lasts much longer and you can stop any rust problems from popping up.  When I say thorough I mean lift the vehicle in the air, remove any plastic covers and any vent holes, blast all the built up salt and sand out, remove any surface rust, wash, and coat with paint or a protective film. Doing this and giving your car regular car washes will keep it happy and rust free for many years.

What to protect the underside of your vehicle with?

Some of the better known ways to protect the underside of your vehicle include covering it with used motor oil (messy!), painting it with a rubberized under coat or black Rustoleum, or a protective film like Fluid Film, or Amsoil Heavy Duty Metal Protector.

stop rust products
Anything is better than nothing.

I’ve had good luck with the Amsoil Heavy Duty Metal Protector, you can find it online or your local NAPA carries it. Give your vehicle a good cleaning and then a good few coats of the Amsoil and it is good to go. The Amsoil seems to hold up well through the car washes too!

This one I can’t stress enough, if you don’t wash the salt off it will eat away at your vehicle. See the picture of the beautiful truck above? See all that white stuff? Its SALT! Giving your vehicle regular washes is a great way to keep it from turning to dust. I would recommend a wash place like ScrubaDub that offers a membership program with unlimited washes for only $25.00/month! Most noteworthy my favorite part about ScrubaDub is they have Free Vacuums at their Forest Ave Portland Location!

Get your vehicle professionally rust proofed!

Ok, not everyone is going to want to get down and dirty on rust proofing their vehicle. Luckily for those who want to stay clean, their are several shops and professionals out their willing to do the job. Typical basic rust proofing services cost around $150-$300 for most vehicles. Sometimes trucks can cost more depending on the size. Its a good idea to get it done every other year to ensure no problems arise. Best if done annually.

If you can try and use a company that guarantees their protection. Chris at Downeast Undercoating prefers to use a bedliner product as he says its much tougher than the rubberized undercoat most places use. He guarantees his protection will hold up through the winter or your next coating is half off. Finding a shop that does good prep work and uses products with good adhesion will get you the best overall protection for your dollar.

Save your vehicle, and save money by rust proofing.

In conclusion its important to be conscious about rust prevention. Spending a couple hundred dollars a year for 10 years, can potentially keep your vehicle on the road for an extra five. Like my grandpa always said, “If its a vehicles not rusted out, you can fix anything else that’s wrong with it and drive it forever”. Brake lines, Fuel lines, Rocker Panels, Control Arms, Sub Frames, these are all expensive repairs. I’ve got a truck from California with mint factory brake lines that are 27 years old. You’ll save in the long run by preventing rust while keeping your vehicle safer.
